The Grilled Cheese Grill takes childhood nostalgia to a whole new level. Every detail about the cart, from the school bus seating to the creative cheese sandwiches, makes you feel like a kid again. But what the Grilled Cheese Grill has to offer is no measly kids menu. Packed with nearly unlimited ingredients, you can create your own concoction of cheesy goodness or pick from the wide variety of exceptional sandwiches (usually created by childhood memories of owner Matt Breslow and his crew of workers). Each creation takes the classic grilled cheese sandwich and adds a twist.
A popular pick, The Jalapeno Popper ($5.75), has roasted jalapenos, Colby jack, cream cheese and corn tortilla chips on sourdough bread. The crack of the chips and the spice of the peppers make for a delicious medley of texture and taste. If you’ve got the appetite, go for The Original Cheesus “burger behemoth” ($8.50). They’ve replaced buns with two grilled cheese sandwiches—one with pickles and American cheese and one with grilled onions and Colby jack. In the middle rests a 1/3 pound burger and all the extra fixings you desire. (Bonus: they buy meat and produce locally.) Be sure to order the tomato soup ($2.50) for dipping.
Stick around to eat your sandwich, as a grilled cheese should only be eaten with the cheese nice and melty. Sit in the school bus, with its decorative paintings from the ceiling to the floor and tables covered in old school photos, or grab one of the many covered picnic tables. Be sure to check up on Facebook and Twitter for specials and locations. Since its inception three years ago, these cheese moguls have already added two more locations—one downtown with a smaller menu and one in SE Portland with a double-decker bus for dining. So no matter where you are in Portland, The Grilled Cheese Grill is there to satisfy your cheesy cravings.
