POP THE CORK—it’s noisemaker-worthy when a restaurant hits the tenth anniversary, as The Painted Lady in Newberg did this year. Owners Jessica Bagley and Allen Routt met in Miami, though Bagley is a native Oregonian. A cross-country trip resulted in them “falling in love with the wine country experience: sophisticated food and wine, in a country setting, near agriculture and the source of the product being used,” according to Bagley.
When their original goal of opening a restaurant in Napa Valley proved financially unfeasible, they considered Oregon and faith became fate when they found the perfect property that is now The Painted Lady. Behind the white picket fence sits a quaint Victorian house, carefully restored. Inside, whimsical dishes are whipped together using locally purveyed organic ingredients from nearby farms. To succeed in the restaurant business requires a medley of vision, heart and dogged determination. Routt and Bagley possess all the necessary ingredients. Following the rules of the painted lady colorist movement that started in San Francisco and which has now spread throughout the United States, they painted the restaurant in three or more contrasting colors, highlighting the building’s natural decorative flourishes. They apply a similar philosophy to each dish, elegantly balancing contrasting flavors that excite the palate with notes of the food’s natural piquancy.
