You don’t have to spend the holidays in Germany to experience the tradition of drinking glühwein, or mulled wine. The warm, spiced beverage is a staple during the winter season, when the community gathers at the local Christmas markets in the evening to stroll through the booths, sample traditional food and drink mugs and mugs of glühwein.
Mulled wine is easy to make at home. After you have a foundation of ingredients, you don’t need to follow a recipe. Experiment with different combinations of spices to find your favorite flavor. The drink becomes more flavorful the longer it simmers on the stove, so you can make a large batch for holiday parties to have brewing all night.
One bottle of red wine
2 cups of spiced cider
¼ cup of honey or sugar
Anise seeds or stars
Combine ingredients in a large stock pot and bring to a boil, then let it simmer for at least 10 minutes. Serve warm in mugs. Add more ingredients as desired.
