Mike Rosenberg serves as president of of the board of directors of SEMpdx, all while running his own successful marketing firm with his wife, Amy. Mike spoke with 1859’s Megan Oliver about maximizing the potential of social media.
What are your social media tips for Oregon businesses, brands and personalities?
Be authentic, plan and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Users should also define what they are using each medium to accomplish. Is Twitter a sales tool, a channel for customer service and/or an avenue to show industry thought leadership? What about Facebook; are you pushing information about your business or providing a resource for potential customers interested in your industry/products/services?
Be social. Don’t just create and push your own information. Share information from others that you find useful/interesting (and give them credit by tagging, etc.).
Which Oregonians should people “follow” on Twitter?
It really depends on what type of information you want. If you are using Twitter for daily news, the big Oregon Twitter presences (based on number of followers) are @Oregonian, @KGWNews, @KATUNews, @OPB and @RonWyden—to provide a few.
For specific industries, you have to find the influencers. You can do this by using a variety of tools, including SEOmoz’s Followerwonk. This site allows you to find Twitter users based on industry, interest, vertical, location, name, URL, etc.
For example, you can find users who have “journalist” in their bio, at least 1,000 followers, a minimum of 200 tweets and who are located in Oregon (or specific towns in Oregon).

How is SEMpdx changing the way Oregonians relate to the web?
Our mission is to help Oregonians and Oregon companies succeed in digital marketing. We enable more Oregonians to use the web to grow their businesses by providing digital marketing educational events and resources. The other part of our mission is to enhance Oregon’s reputation as a hotbed for digital marketing talent, which increases jobs and salaries. We also help facilitate relationships within and across industries by hosting a social event (The Rooftop Networking Party, see below) with the other marketing groups in Oregon.
What web trends do you see developing for 2013?
We certainly expect more marketing dollars and emphasis to continue to shift online. Marketers will continue to collect more and more customer data which will enable them to provide deeper/more customized experiences to users. People will increasingly consume the web via mobile smart phones and tablets. This will lead to more mobile-specific content and experience for users.
The biggest and most diverse event for SEMpdx is SearchFest, which is scheduled for February 28, 2014 at The Governor Hotel in Portland. The annual daylong digital marketing conference will be held on the same day.
