Eastern Oregon | Eagle Cap Extreme

Joseph isn’t always teeming with mushers, but every January, sled dog teams head to the northeastern corner of the state for the Eagle Cap Extreme. The 200-mile, twelve-dog race starts from Fergi Ski Area in Joseph, where the public can watch for free. From there, racers sled through the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and into the belly of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It is the only Yukon Quest and Iditarod qualifier in the state of Oregon. If qualifying isn’t the goal, there are two options for shorter races, as well as a twenty-mile junior race for kids between ages 14 and 17.
