Magic happens when you combine several notable Portland chefs, a setting mid-August sun and a worthy cause. The Parr Lumber Great Summer Chef Off enters its fourth year with momentum, annually assembling select Portland chefs for a barbecue cook-off event supporting the Harrington Family Foundation and its mission to provide Oregon youths a high-quality secondary education through scholarship. Held at Bladberry Farm on Sauvie Island, chefs compete to win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing, and guests sample submissions, casting a vote for best dish. Previous winners include local gastronomy dignitaries: Rick Gencarelli of Lardo, a two-time champion, and Greg and Gabrielle Denton from Ox, who took the gold in 2016 and donated the prize money to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year’s participants include Roscoe Roberson from Joey Harrington’s recently opened and buzz-worthy Pearl Tavern, Aaron Barnett from St. Jack and Matthew Sigler from Renata. Libation partners include: Domaine Drouhin Oregon, Willamette Valley Vineyards and Full Sail Brewing Company. The 2017 event will be held August 19, with live entertainment from Big Foot Mojo. Tickets are on sale now.
