Mount Angel Oktoberfest

SEPTEMBER 17-20

It might not have the authenticity of Prince Ludwig’s wedding reception — where Oktoberfest originated — but a couple of countries and an ocean away, Oregon has tapped into the Bavarian celebration with the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. This year is the 50th anniversary of the event, which means in addition to the usual bratwurst, beer, live music and wiener dog races, there will be a performance from The von Trapps (yes, the great-grandchildren of the von Trapps, see more on pg. 60), a historical exhibit of Mount Angel Oktoberfest’s past, a sausage-making contest and more quirky entertainment. At this particular Oktoberfest, there will also be a car show, golf tournament, Volkswalk (5K and 10K), a military vehicle display, a street dance and a Die Früchtaule — a harvest monument adapted from other German harvest celebrations. Put those lederhosen to appropriate use and enjoy a copule pints of the Benedictine Brewery Black Habit Ale from the local abbey brewery, or a Weihenstephaner, imported from the oldest brewery in the world in Germany. Prost!
