When pulling up to the A la Carts pod, you will feel as though you are arriving at a food cart carnival. With brightly colored flags and a large seating area in the center of over a dozen carts, it is a lively place that offers up a mélange of carts that will satisfy nearly any craving. If your craving is pizza, Southwestern Pizza Company is the place to be. Though not the best pizza I have had in all of Portland, it is definitely the best pizza cart I’ve found.
With inspiration from Native American women eating flat bread in Sedona, Arizona, the pizza is served on a crunchy, thin crust. Open around brunch time, serving through lunch hours and closing after dinner hours, Southwestern Pizza Company offers many different pizza toppings—including breakfast pizzas. Keep a lookout for the breakfast specials, such as the Sunrise with butter sauce, eggs and your choice of bacon, sausage or ham ($8). During other hours, try their popular Sedona pizza with Dutched Family Farms peppery country bacon (locally grown), arugula and tomato—nestled in their rustic sauce topped with a premium four-cheese blend ($8.75). With enough of each topping to have every flavor in each bite, you will be satisfied from start to finish. If you are a fan of a creamy white sauce- base, try the Santa Fe with fajita-spiced grilled chicken and creamy Alfredo sauce ($6.75). The Alfredo is not too overwhelming and the cheese covers the entire pizza out to the very edges of the crust—a great choice for an extra cheesy craving.
Southwestern Pizza Company also offers wheat and gluten free options, as well as dairy-free and goat cheese alternatives. If you’re not feeling any of the house recipes, build your own! Starting at $5.75 you can pick your own sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you desire at additional costs. Any pizza you order will come out generously topped. A ten-inch pizza with almost any mix of toppings you can imagine will be ready for you in just ten minutes.
