On May 19, 2012 the Oregon chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers hosted the first PDX Squared photography event. Portland photographers, both professional and emerging, were invited to enter the contest, aimed at documenting the culture of Portland. The ASMP took one square mile of downtown Portland and divided it into forty-nine squares, with each photographer claiming a square as their territory.

Over the course of the day, each photographer shot photos in their square, up to five of which were then submitted for judging in five categories: Portlandia, portrait, architecture, documentary and Lensbaby (the last referring to a specific type of lens used).

Each day this week, 1859 will announce on our Facebook page the posting of a new gallery of photos from the contest, with all 206 displayed in five galleries by the end of the week. Listed with each photo is the photographer’s name and the category in which the photo was submitted. For more information (including bios of judges Patty Reksten, Ken Hawkins and Thomas Boyd), see the ASMP website
