Gerry Frank’s fascination with good food began shortly after his 1948 graduation from Cambridge University in England. “The cuisine was so bad over there, when I got home I really started thinking about food,” says the Meier & Frank department store heir, philanthropist and food critic. Today when he’s not greeting customers at his Salem restaurant, Konditorei, Frank lets his love of food take him to destinations around the world. Aside from his own eatery—which is known for its savory quiches, homemade soups and remarkable cakes—here are five of his favorite food stops in Oregon.

1

Jake’s Famous Crawfish, Portland

“For seafood, this is probably the best in the state. They have such a large variety, and the seafood is always fresh.”

2

The Painted Lady Restaurant, Newberg

“The bread and salads are especially terrific.”

3

Plateau in the Wildhorse Resort & Casino, Pendleton

“They make a great burger.”

4

Langlois Market, Langlois

“Here you’ll find the best hot dog you’ve ever tasted.”

5

Tillamook Cheese Factory, Tillamook

“I love their sharp cheddar cheese spread, and it’s only available at the factory.”
