Ode to Oregon: One Musician’s Journey

Musician Slater Smith was born and raised in Oregon, and after graduating college here, debated whether to stay or move. He decided to stay, but that was only part of his choice. Slater embarked on a mission to travel the entire state. As a project with the band The Weather Machine, he wrote the song “Back O’er Oregon,” an ode to the state’s finest qualities. Then his “a-ha moment” came: he realized a perfect way to see the state would be to sing this song in the every one of Oregon’s state parks.

On his summer journey, Slater is using a GoPro camera to film himself playing guitar and singing the song. At the end of his travels, he will transform the footage into a music video that brings together two of his passions – music and Oregon.

Hear him describe his quest in this video. And listen to “Back O’er Oregon” and more from The Weather Machine here.
