I have been in the ski industry since I was 8. My three older brothers and I started ski racing on Mount Hood when we were very young. When I was done with my ski racing career at age 22, I coached at Crystal Mountain, Washington and fished in Alaska for twelve years, before deciding to come back to Oregon to be closer to family.
It was then that I started coaching the junior ski racing team for the Multnomah Athletic Club. That is mainly what brought me to Government Camp twelve years ago. Through coaching, I have had the chance to meet great people, including my business partner, William Berman. Together we have built townhomes in Government Camp, the Tamarack Lodge, and currently own nine acres of land, where we’re building a subdivision called Tyrolean Meadows.
Government Camp is a quiet little village, where we help each other. My wife, Carla, and I love having peace of mind in raising our 7-month-old son, Liam, here. We live close to work, and there is no crime and no traffic. There are a lot of great things to do year-round. We have great restaurants in town, such as the Huckleberry Inn, which serves an excellent All-American menu and is family friendly; the Mt. Hood Brewery at the Ice Axe Grill, for locally brewed beer, a nice dinner and a ball game; and the tavernstyle Charlie’s Mountain View—a tradition for the Government Camp locals.
For those who thought that skiing was only a winter activity, Mount Hood proves you wrong. Mount Hood is the only ski area in North America that offers skiing year-round. Several clubs from around the world come up to Mount Hood during the summer for ski training camps, which makes our town quite busy even in the summer months.
For nature-lovers like my wife, hiking and mountain biking are big during the summer months up
here. There is a lot of great wildlife, and lots of terrain for beginners, intermediate or advanced bikers.
Between coaching ski racing for the Multnomah Athletic Club, building homes in Tyrolean Meadows, and enjoying my family, I love this beautiful mountain and taking advantage of all it has to offer.
