Want to live like a local in the heart of Oregon wine country? Check into Lucky Duck, where Carlton’s oldest building is now a sleek home base for eating, drinking and settling into small-town life. Upstairs, a newly refreshed two-bedroom guest house occupies the top floor of the 1910 building that once housed Carlton’s first bank.

The latest venture from James Beard-nominated chef Kari Shaughnessy and her Hayward team, Lucky Duck puts a distinctly local spin on wine-country hospitality. Think Oregon’s twist on the European “country restaurant with rooms”—an immersive stay where food and drink are central to the fun, not an afterthought.

Decorated with earthy ceramics, funky art posters and vintage lamps, the living space has serious cool-aunt vibes. And the kitchen? Chef-worthy, naturally, with Bernal Cutlery knives, Made In cookware and Sabre flatware. Go ahead and plan a night in.

A kitchen made for your own culinary pursuits.

Outside, the private courtyard is made for dinner parties. Fire up the grill, gather around the outdoor table for ten or just sink into the hot tub with a glass of local wine. Come morning, head downstairs for espresso and something freshly baked at the Lucky Duck café, and then grab picnic provisions before heading out. For wine, Flâneur Wines and Big Table Farm are both just a few blocks away. Think less hotel, more keys to the most-coveted apartment in wine country.

THE STAY

The two-bedroom guest-house gets the luxe treatment: Coyuchi linens, Hawkins New York towels, Under Luna bath products and a tucked-away private hot tub. Want to really settle in? Add a fridge stocked with prepared foods and wine curated by chef Kari.

CORNER CAFÉ

Good mornings start here with espresso from Summon Coffee and pastries from the Hayward kitchen. The grab-and-go case is stocked with picnic provisions, from farmstead cheeses and ferments to cured meats and tubs of Hayward’s umami-rich koji butter. And don’t miss chef Kari’s cult-favorite tahini cookies—if you can snag one before they sell out.

LUCKY DUCK SHOP

Find earthy ceramics from Sarah Kersten Studio, MADRE Linen napkins, Sabre cutlery, vintage glassware, statement whisks and a thought-ful selection of wines from producers including Monument and Morgen Long. The flower-adorned cookbook room stacks floor-to-ceiling shelves with the tomes that inspire Hayward’s kitchen and personal notes from the chef.

POP-UPS

There’s always something cooking. Seasonal pop-ups range from tastings with boutique producers like Perry Colin to restaurant residencies, including a recent Mexican-in-spired stint from Astral. Come fall, holiday markets bring cured meats from Revel Meat Co., bouquets from Even Pull Farm and the chef’s legendary sourdough focaccia.
