On a brisk, moonlit night, I peer into tide pools, mesmerized by wispy sea anemones. Our local guide knows every creature that calls the intertidal zone home. When rain begins to patter, we wander just a few minutes across the beach to our luxe lodging at Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa.
One of the coast’s most celebrated escapes, Headlands is a study in thoughtful design. Warm, lodge-like interiors—leather couches, sheepskin throws, intimate fireplace nooks—are balanced by contemporary touches like sea-grass light fixtures and sculptural branch chandeliers. Expansive windows frame rolling dunes, surfers carving waves and the striking silhouette of Haystack Rock, seamlessly bringing the outside in.
Perched on a bluff with every room facing the ocean, the lodge invites lingering. But it’s the adventure offerings that truly elevate the stay. By dawn, I was skimming over swells in a dory boat, fishing for lingcod with a seasoned local captain. That afternoon, a guide led me on a meditative forest-bathing walk through misty evergreens.
With options ranging from whale watching and dune hikes to stargazing and oyster shucking, this is the ultimate retreat for anyone craving a renewed sense of wonder along Oregon’s wild coast. Before the sand was even out of my shoes, I’d already booked my return.
ROOMS
Each of the thirty-three oceanview rooms is a serene retreat featuring cozy fireplaces, warm cedar accents and soft globe lighting. Floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies frame crashing waves and windswept dune grass. Thoughtful amenities include deep soaking tubs, reading nooks and custom racks for surfboards or bikes. Many rooms are also dog-friendly.
WELLNESS
Relax and rejuvenate at the onsite Tidepools Spa, where offerings range from Ayurvedic-inspired facials to marine massages with hydrating kelp leaf wraps. The fitness center offers a full gym with Peloton bikes and Precor equipment, slow yoga and meditation classes, a steam room and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the ocean.
ADVENTURE CENTER
Explore the coast with one of the resort’s expert Adventure Coaches. Hike coastal dunes, kayak quiet rivers, tide pool at twilight or ride fat-tire bikes along the beach. You can also learn to surf, fish from a dory boat or go clamming and foraging. Need gear? No problem—they’ve got you covered from cruiser bikes and surfboards to trekking poles and binoculars.
DINING
Catch sunrise or sunset from the stunning Meridian Restaurant & Bar, a stylish space with exposed golden beams and soaring windows overlooking the ocean. Open daily, the restaurant serves coastal cuisine, including avocado toast topped with Dungeness crab, local steamer clams with chorizo and crispy crab arancini rolls.
