The Sleep Session: Yoga for Better Rest

There are few things more frustrating than not being able to sleep. While friends and family are getting re-fueled, you lie there awake, thinking about how tough it will be tomorrow when you have to get through your day completely depleted.

While there is no “cure” for a sleep disorder, there is a form of guided relaxation called “Yoga Nidra” that brings the practitioner into a state of deep rest. It is believed that the state of consciousness that is accessed is deeper than sleep and therefore even more rejuvenating.

A short session of Yoga Nidra can feel equivalent to hours of regular sleep. The Sleep Sessions will begin with a short philosophy introduction followed by breath work (pranayama.) Yoga Nidra is practiced lying down, so please bring an extra blanket to stay warm and maybe something to place under your bent knees if you know that you have a sensitive lower back.

While the lights will be dim, you might possibly bring something to cover your eyes as well. The sessions will conclude with a short meditation on what it means to be “Awake”.

About Sara:
Sara Elizabeth Ivanhoe, M.A. has been teaching yoga since 1995. She is the Yoga Spokesperson for “Weight Watchers,” “Yoga for Dummies,” “Crunch Yoga,” and appeared as a series regular on “Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab” as the therapeutic instructor. She served as the yoga columnist for Health magazine for three years and has written and appeared in almost every yoga and health publication. Twenty years after graduating with honors from NYU, Ivanhoe completed her master’s degree in 2015 from Loyola Marymount University as part of the inaugural class in Yoga Studies where she served as Senator of the student body for Bellarmine College. Most recently she partnered with Oprah Magazine to co-create the “Just Breathe” brand of yoga and meditation now taught on Holland America Cruise lines internationally. She currently serves as the Yoga and Meditation Content Curator for YogaGlo, teaches at LMU in the Yoga Studies department and is part of the MindfulUSC faculty where she teaches a class on… Sleep.
