For all you art lovers and history geeks out there, this will be a fascinating presentation about The Odyssey represented in art across the millennia.
Set against the backdrop of Leslie Peterson Sapp’s new exhibit “Man of Many Wiles: Artwork Based on The Odyssey”, art historian John Doyle will review some of the best examples of art inspired by The Odyssey from antiquity to the 19th century. Then Leslie Peterson Sapp will show some examples of artists that have inspired and guided her in her current series. She will be showing examples of art from Picasso, Romare Bearden, Matisse, and children books illustrators Alice and Martin Provensen.
Leslie Peterson Sapp is an artist who combines drawing, collage and painting to create works of art that tell a story. She is most inspired by the past. Her imagery comes from the ancient world, classic film, vintage snapshots, her life and imagination. She depicts human interactions from the most humble and everyday, to the most profound and mystical. Her works can be seen in galleries and exhibitions throughout the Northwest. She went to New York for college and attended Parsons School of Design, The Art Students League, and graduating Cum Laude with a BFA from Queens College, The City University of New York. She was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and currently lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
John Doyle has an M.A. in Art History from Tufts University and is a former Education Department lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He now teaches classes and gives educational tours with The Architectural Heritage Center and Portland Underground Graduate School.
This presentation is a special event for Leslie Peterson Sapp’s art exhibit “Man of Many Wiles: Artworks Based on The Odyssey” On view at Gallery 114 through May 27th
