Durufle Requiem

10/21/2017

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

First United Methodist Church

Oregon Repertory Singers begins its 44th season with Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, published in 1947 and dedicated by the composer to his father’s memory. This profound and meditative setting of the requiem mass emphasizes a peaceful passing into paradise. Oregon Repertory Singers performs the work for choir, soloists, and organ, featuring internationally renowned organist Jonas Nordwall, who returns to the stage with ORS after his stunning performances last year in The Armed Man and Glory of Christmas.

Accompanying the Requiem is a collection of music by composers from the Pacific Northwest. The program includes the Northwest premiere of two new works by National Medal of Arts winner and Portland native Morten Lauridsen: settings of Dana Gioia’s “Prayer” and Pablo Neruda’s sonnet “Ya eres mia” for choir and piano. ORS also performs music from local composers Joan Szymko, Naomi LaViolette, Stacey Philipps, and more–all to be included on the choir’s new album set for release in fall 2018.
